About us

We lead the delivery of NSW's first 5 renewable energy zones and other priority transmission projects

Who we are

We lead the delivery of renewable energy zones (REZs) to ensure long-term energy security for NSW.

These zones will harness the state’s abundant wind and solar resources to keep the lights on and deliver clean, affordable and reliable electricity to everyone in the state.

We go by EnergyCo, but our official title is the Energy Corporation of New South Wales.

The work we’re doing under the NSW Government’s Electricity Infrastructure Roadmap (the Roadmap) involves upgrading the grid to connect new generation and storage projects into the electricity system.

We have an on-the-ground presence in all of NSW’s renewable energy zones and offices in Sydney, Dubbo, Newcastle and Armidale.

Our executive team members run divisions to deliver our projects, meet our obligations under NSW Government legislation and to run our day-to-day functions.

The board brings unique skills and experience to drive our strategic initiatives forward, guiding our work and ensuring that NSW remains at the forefront of energy innovation.

Our renewable energy zones harness NSW's abundant wind and solar to power the state and deliver benefits to local communities.

What we do

There are three key elements to our work.

  • We plan and design new transmission infrastructure for our renewable energy zones. This includes power lines, substations and batteries, which we need for new renewable energy projects.
  • We design and manage access schemes to select the best wind, solar and storage projects to connect to the grid in our renewable energy zones.
  • We work with communities to plan and shape our projects, to minimise impacts and to deliver benefits that will leave a positive legacy for the people who host electricity infrastructure.

We’re also coordinating enabling infrastructure work like road upgrades across the state. This is necessary for us to deliver our projects efficiently and with the greatest value for our communities.

We've developed this 20-year strategy for coordination of NSW transmission projects to connect generation and storage projects.

Who we work with

We’re one of a group of entities working together to achieve the objectives of the Roadmap, which is the state’s plan to replace our retiring coal-fired power plants.

This plan will:

  • secure clean, reliable and affordable electricity for NSW consumers
  • deliver economic and social benefits for local and Aboriginal communities.

Our official role under the Roadmap is infrastructure planner, and we work with communities to shape and deliver both transmission projects and local benefits.

We work alongside:

  • AEMO Services in their role as the consumer trustee, ensuring the long-term financial interests of NSW electricity customers
  • the Australian Energy Regulator and the Independent Regulatory and Pricing Tribunal (IPART) as regulators, each with specific roles under the Roadmap.

Whole of government coordination

The whole of the NSW Government is behind this plan, which requires transmission, generation and storage projects to work together. It also needs strong collaboration between governments, industry and communities.

We’re working with everyone involved to maximise benefits and minimise impacts for everyone involved.

Our legislation

Most of the work we do falls under the Electricity Infrastructure Investment Act 2020, which is the legislation that underpins the Electricity Infrastructure Roadmap.

The NSW Government originally established EnergyCo as a statutory body under the Energy and Utilities Administration Act 1987.
