Key details

We're working with Transport for NSW to upgrade road intersections and pinch-points along the state-road network to make it possible to safely and efficiently transport the oversized equipment needed to build renewable energy zones (REZs). These components include wind turbines and transformers for generation and transmission projects.

The road upgrades will be delivered in stages to unlock access to REZs as they progress.

Oversize overmass (OSOM) deliveries to the Central-West Orana and New England REZs will use a common route from the Port of Newcastle to Muswellbrook, before diverging and continuing towards their respective REZ.

Once delivered, the upgrades will benefit all motorists by reducing delay times, easing travel through intersections and improving road safety.

The routes

Road upgrades are underway between the Port of Newcastle and Elong Elong in the Central-West Orana REZ.

We are planning the most suitable, low-impact OSOM route to deliver energy components from the Port of Newcastle to the New England REZ.

About the road upgrades

Equipment travelling to renewable energy projects, like wind turbines or transformers, is often very long or wide, but they can also be very high.

The road upgrades will remove the physical barriers to moving the equipment. They may include:

  • intersection upgrades
  • pavement widening
  • new turning lanes
  • new pullover bays
  • relocating overhead electrical wires.

The Port to REZ program is essential for building renewable energy zones and will deliver this critical infrastructure in a way that minimises impacts on communities and enables legacy benefits.

Working with Transport for NSW

We're leading the Port to REZ road upgrades program, while Transport for NSW is the road authority and lead agency for the operation of the road network.

Coordinating the timing and frequency of OSOM deliveries is critical to minimising disruption for road users and communities. We're supporting Transport for NSW, who will develop ways to coordinate how OSOM vehicles and traffic impacts will be managed.

Visit the renewable transportation webpage for more details on Transport’s strategy for managing OSOM deliveries to renewable energy zones or email the team at [email protected]

Memorandum of understanding

A Memorandum of Understading (MOU) is in place between EnergyCo and Transport for NSW to manage transport related projects and impacts for REZ development.

Newcastle Logistics Precinct

Port to REZ road upgrades are a part of a coordinated plan to streamline logistics between the Port of Newcastle and renewable energy zones, ensuring these critical supply chains are efficient and reliable.

The upgrades will be complemented by the development of the Newcastle Logistics Precinct, a purpose-built facility designed to store and transfer the OSOM equipment needed to build projects in renewable energy zones.

Travelling through the REZs

The initial Port to REZ routes involve three REZs – the Central-West Orana REZ, New England REZ and the Hunter Central Coast REZ. It also crosses the area identified for the Hunter Transmission Project. You can learn more about these by clicking the cards below.
