Our projects

We’re upgrading the grid to secure our energy future and keep the lights on for everyone in NSW

EnergyCo is the NSW Government body upgrading the grid to build a reliable electricity system as coal-fired power stations retire. Our work will provide clean, affordable, reliable energy to everyone in NSW.

We're leading the process to ensure the right infrastructure is built in the right place, at the right time. These include the state’s 5 renewable energy zones (REZs), plus the Waratah Super Battery Project and Hunter Transmission Project.

We’re also coordinating other work that we need for our renewable energy zones, like road upgrade projects with Transport for NSW under the Port to Renewable Energy Zones connections program.

NSW’s renewable energy zones

The NSW Government has identified 5 renewable energy zones as priority areas to develop wind, solar and storage projects and support transmission infrastructure.

These zones will harness NSW’s abundant wind and solar resources to power the state and will deliver lasting benefits to local communities.

As part of our role as the infrastructure planner for these zones, we are leading community engagement to maximise benefits and minimise impacts.

Priority transmission infrastructure projects

There are 2 major projects we need to deliver in addition to the renewable energy zones. Both are critical for NSW and will play important roles in the upgraded grid.

These are:

  • the Waratah Super Battery Project, which will act as a shock absorber for the grid in case of events like lightning strikes and allow more energy to reach other parts of the state
  • the Hunter Transmission Project, which will carry electricity from the Central-West Orana and New England renewable energy zones to the rest of the state.

Coordinating generation and storage projects in renewable energy zones

A major part of our role is to coordinate projects like wind farms, solar farms and big batteries with new power lines that will connect to the existing NSW electricity grid.

The main way that we do this is by designing access schemes for our renewable energy zones. These schemes govern which generation and storage projects can connect to the zones. This gives certainty to investors and ensures that the best projects connect to the grid.

Access schemes also generate funding for projects and programs that benefit local communities by collecting access fees from the generators which receive the right to connect.

Projects that enable the energy transition

The work we’re doing is about delivering new energy infrastructure to power our state. To do this, we need to make sure other types of infrastructure like our roads and ports are also up to task.

That’s why we’re working with other parts of the government to make sure everything goes smoothly.
