Planning
We're carrying out investigation and design work along the route. This includes speaking with landowners and local councils to understand local road use, and developing designs for required intersection and road upgrades.
-
Construction
Upgrades are expected to commence in 2027.

Operation
First OSOM vehicle movements to the New England REZ are expected from 2028.
Route planning
EnergyCo is working closely with Transport for NSW to determine the most suitable, low-impact route to transport oversize overmass renewable energy components from the Port of Newcastle to the New England REZ.
Since early 2024, we’ve been investigating route options from Muswellbrook to the New England REZ. This work includes traffic modelling, bridge and pavement assessments, environmental investigations and consultation with local councils, landowners and key stakeholders.
When selecting a route, we consider:
- road safety for motorists, pedestrians and local communities
- the ability of roads, bridges and intersections to safely accommodate large and heavy loads
- opportunities to bypass town centres, including Muswellbrook and Tamworth
- ways to minimise traffic impacts in areas such as Uralla, Walcha and Armidale
- potential upgrades to intersections and pinch-points to improve safety and traffic flow.
The OSOM route will include sections of the New England Highway and Oxley Highway, as well as selected local roads. Some upgrades may be required, such as pavement widening, drainage adjustments, intersection improvements and relocation of signage or utilities.
The route is being confirmed in stages as design progresses. We will continue to work with councils, landowners and the community and will share further information, including detailed maps and proposed intersection upgrades, as planning is finalised.
