Key details

The Hunter and Central Coast regions will play an important role in helping NSW transition to a renewable energy future, including hosting new transmission infrastructure like the proposed Hunter Transmission Project (HTP). We want to make sure local communities see meaningful, lasting benefits in return for hosting new energy infrastructure.

Through our community and employment benefit program, regional communities will share in the benefits of our renewable energy projects.

Benefits of projects in the region

We’re in the early stages of planning a renewable energy zone (REZ) in the Hunter and Central Coast regions. The REZ will ensure these regions have a key role in a renewable energy future, powering existing industries and supporting economic growth, including emerging renewable energy technology.

We’re committed to planning and delivering the REZ and key projects like the Hunter Transmission Project in a way that minimises impacts and creates lasting benefits for local communities. Key benefits of the REZ will include:

  • Reliable clean energy – helping improve the reliability of energy supply for communities across NSW.
  • Local jobs and training – during construction, the Hunter Transmission Project and projects in the Hunter-Central Coast Renewable Energy Zone are forecast to support an average of 760 direct jobs per year during construction, and about 360 ongoing operational jobs from 2030.
  • Regional economic growth – increased demand for goods, services and workers will support stronger, more diverse local economies.
  • New income for landowners – through payments for hosting new energy infrastructure.

Hunter Transmission Project benefit sharing package

We’ll develop a benefit sharing package to make sure the Hunter community sees lasting, meaningful benefits in return for hosting the Hunter Transmission Project during and after its construction. The package will focus on local communities most affected by construction, while also supporting initiatives that benefit the broader region.

About the Community and Employment Benefit Program

The Hunter Transmission Project benefit sharing package will be delivered in line with EnergyCo’s Community and Employment Benefit Program, which aims to:

  • improve liveability in regional communities impacted by new energy infrastructure
  • improve and create local employment opportunities
  • improve outcomes for First Nations people
  • support regional economic development
  • improve community connection
  • boost resilience and innovation.
Types of opportunities for community benefits

Early consultation has helped identify potential opportunities. We’ll engage with key stakeholders as the package is developed including local councils, Aboriginal service providers, peak business groups, education and training providers, and forest users.

Types of community and employment projects which could be delivered include:

  • strategic community initiatives led by local councils
  • local skills, training and employment programs
  • improvements to recreation infrastructure in State forests
  • services, programs or infrastructure to support First Nations communities
  • support payments to private landowners significantly visually impacted by project infrastructure.
