Our projects in the Hunter and Central Coast regions

The Hunter and Central Coast are at the heart of our work to deliver clean, reliable and affordable energy for NSW as our coal-fired power plants retire.

The Hunter and Central Coast are critical for NSW's energy future

  • They're home to new energy infrastructure that will power the Hunter and Central Coast and the rest of the state for decades to come.
  • The Hunter is the primary funnel for freight and logistics from the Port of Newcastle to surrounding regions, including inland renewable energy zones.

Energy infrastructure projects

We’re planning 4 major energy projects for the Hunter and Central Coast.

  • The Hunter Transmission Project will carry electricity from our inland renewable energy zones to other parts of the state.
  • The Hunter-Central Coast Renewable Energy Zone Network Infrastructure Project will unlock 1 gigawatt of network capacity for new generation and storage projects.
  • The Waratah Super Battery Project will act as a shock absorber for the grid during events like lightning strikes.
  • The New England Renewable Energy Zone Network Infrastructure Project is a new transmission line that will run through the Upper Hunter. It will carry electricity from the New England region through the Hunter to the rest of the state.

Project developers may also plan and build generation and storage projects in the region. These include wind farms, solar farms and battery storage systems.

Enabling infrastructure projects

As our renewable energy zones ramp up, the Hunter and Central Coast will play an important role supporting freight and logistics.

To support this, we’re delivering enabling infrastructure projects, such as road upgrades, that will minimise impacts on the community.

  • The Port to Renewable Energy Zones road upgrades program will support the transport of large equipment to inland zones.
  • The Newcastle Logistics Precinct will provide additional storage at the Port of Newcastle for renewable energy developments.
