Women in Construction Taster Program launched in Central-West Orana REZ

Central West Orana REZ

The NSW Government is backing more women to take up careers in construction and renewable energy, with the launch of the Women in Construction Taster Program across the Central-West Orana Renewable Energy Zone (REZ).

Delivered by EnergyCo in partnership with the Department of Education, VERTO, SKIVL and Yakka Training, this fully-funded program provides accredited, hands-on training designed to build confidence, skills and job readiness for women looking to take the next step into construction and energy careers.

Over two weeks, participants will gain practical skills in basic machinery operation, hand and power tools, workplace health and safety and traffic control. They will also attend tailored work preparation sessions covering career planning, resume writing and interview skills.

Participants will have the opportunity to hear from, and connect with, employment representatives from renewable energy industry projects in the Central-West Orana REZ. The program is open to women aged 18 and over who live in the Central-West Orana REZ. It will be delivered in Wellington, with the first intake scheduled for November.

Participants who complete the program receive nationally recognised units of competency, including traffic control, white card and first-aid certificates, and tailored career advice to support pathways into further training and employment.

The Central-West Orana REZ is expected to attract up to $25 billion dollars in private investment. It is forecast to support an annual average of about 1,850 direct jobs in the local area during construction, and about 930 ongoing operational jobs from 2034.

The transmission project will enable generators such as solar and wind farms participating in the REZ to export electricity to homes and businesses right across NSW.

Quotes attributable to EnergyCo Chief Executive Officer, Hannah McCaughey:

"We’re focused on ensuring the development of renewable energy infrastructure is inclusive and reflective of the communities it serves.

“That means creating genuine opportunities for women to participate — from leadership roles to on-the-ground delivery — in building a more sustainable future for NSW.

“This program provides a practical pathway for women to gain the skills, qualifications and confidence needed to take up secure, rewarding roles in the Central-West.”
