Key details

The NSW Government is in the delivery phase for the state’s first renewable energy zone (REZ) in the Central-West Orana region.

The Central-West Orana REZ is approximately 20,000 square kilometres centred by Dubbo and Dunedoo, on the land of the Wiradjuri, Wailwan and Kamilaroi people.

The REZ will initially unlock at least 4.5 gigawatts of new network capacity by the late-2020s.

New transmission infrastructure will enable generators (such as solar and wind farms) participating in the REZ to export electricity to the rest of the network.

The REZ is expected to attract up to $25 billion dollars in private investment.

It is forecast to support an annual average of about 1,850 direct jobs in the local area during construction, and about 930 ongoing operational jobs from 2034.

The REZ will also create additional demand for workers in local manufacturing, retail, transport and the supply of goods and services.

Projects in the Central-West Orana REZ

Transmission project

We're responsible for planning new energy infrastructure to connect the Central-West Orana REZ to the existing grid, delivering affordable electricity to NSW.

The Central-West Orana transmission project received NSW planning approval in June 2024.

EnergyCo has appointed ACEREZ – a consortium of ACCIONA, COBRA, and Endeavour Energy – to design, build and finance the Central-West Orana REZ Transmission Project and operate and maintain it for the next 35 years.

Regional Major Infrastructure Studies

Coordinating infrastructure delivery across NSW renewable energy zones

The NSW Government has completed a series of Regional Major Infrastructure Studies to help plan for the future needs of communities in and around the State’s first two renewable energy zones (REZs).

These studies give a clearer picture of how proposed major projects from a range of sectors, including energy, mining, manufacturing and national infrastructure such as Inland Rail may interact over time in the areas hosting the Central-West Orana and New England Renewable Energy Zones.

The government is already acting on the findings. Work is underway on road upgrades, additional housing supply, wastewater improvements and other infrastructure projects to support steady regional growth.

Major projects are individually assessed through established planning processes. These studies provide a cumulative, long-range view of what could occur if a number of proposed projects proceed, as well as the opportunities that come from better sequencing, shared resources, and increased investment in regional NSW.

The Regional Major Infrastructure Studies are the result of consultation with councils, government agencies and industry to assess existing and potential impacts.

They cover issues including skills and training, workforce accommodation, water, waste, and local supply chains.

EnergyCo will use the information contained in the studies to develop the renewable energy zones in a way that considers the broader regional context and encourages growth and sustainable demand for skills, services and infrastructure across the region in the years to come.

The Regional Major Infrastructure Studies for the Central West Orana are available on the Department of Climate Change, Energy the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) website, and Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure (DPHI) website
