Key details

We're committed to providing opportunities and benefits to the Hunter region as an essential component of delivering the Hunter Transmission Project (HTP).

Around 830 people are expected to be needed during construction including labourers, engineers and electricians.

A guiding project principle is Hunter-first. This means where possible we create opportunities to build on the Hunter region’s diverse economic skill base and grow local jobs as we plan and build the HTP.

We’re also committed to increasing income and employment opportunities in line with the First Nations Guidelines

  1. Expression of interest process for local businesses

Between August 2024 and March 2025 we invited local businesses to register their interest to work with the HTP.

  2. Transmission line and substation tender process

The tender process is underway to appoint 2 main contractors to design and build the HTP – 1 for the transmission line and 1 for the substations and switching stations. Tenderers are assessed on their commitment to using local goods and services and have been provided with the registry of interested businesses. From late 2025, successful contractors may contact the registered businesses to finalise opportunities.

  3. Construction

Construction is expected to start in 2027. The network operator will manage the construction and operation of the HTP.

What we’re building for the Hunter Transmission Project

The Hunter Transmission Project involves building a new 500 kilovolt (kV) transmission line of around 110 kilometres between Bayswater in the Upper Hunter and Olney in the Lower Hunter.

The project also includes:

  • building 2 new switching stations at Bayswater and Olney
  • upgrades to the existing Bayswater and Eraring substations
  • building and upgrading access tracks and improving some local roads.

Businesses were invited to register through the ICN Gateway, outlining their areas of interest and capabilities.

In August 2024 we held a series of sessions to explain the Hunter Transmission Project’s procurement process, timelines and ways businesses can be involved. You can view presentation slides from the event here

The tender process for the transmission line and substation works is underway. The registry of interested businesses is available to tenderers, who’ve been encouraged to contact registered businesses to explore potential opportunities. Tenderers will be assessed on their commitment to using local goods and services.

EnergyCo has shortlisted 7 contractors for the 2 key work packages. Read about the shortlisted tenderers.

Next steps

The shortlisted contractors are reviewing the scope of work and familiarising themselves with the project to prepare their tenders. EnergyCo will assess these tenders and select the successful contractors.

From late 2025, successful contractors may begin contacting registered businesses to formalise opportunities.
